Idols and Distractions

We are a society that is constantly rushing.  We are constantly busy with this or that.  We always have excuses on why we can’t spend time with God.  I am one of the best at putting God off saying I don’t have time to sit and visit.  I don’t have time to read His word and spend time with him.  I was nudged today during my reading about this and the fact that when we really think about it our busyness can be considered and Idol.  And we all know that our God is a jealous God and Idols are a HUGE no no in His book.  He looks that them as detestable and disgusting.

Ezekial 8:5 & 6  He said to me, “Son of man, look up toward the north.” So I looked up toward the north, and I noticed to the north of the altar gate was this statue of jealousy at the entrance. 6 He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing – the great abominations that the people of Israel are practicing here, to drive me far from my sanctuary? But you will see greater abominations than these!”

We need to look around us and we need to reevaluate where we are spending our time and how we are spending our time.  What Idols do we have that are keeping us from God?

For me it is a huge list of things and people.  I am constantly on the run.  My day consists of jumping out of bed in the morning, getting ready for work, going to work, going to spend time at my boyfriends house or going home and watching my grandson for my daughter so she can have a break, or just plain old sitting in front of the TV to “catch up” on my MANY shows that I watch every week.  This last one is the BIGGEST Idol/distraction in my life.  I have so much going on everywhere else that my mind would just prefer to shut down and not do anything but stare at a tv screen in someone elses life.  I use it to escape everything when i should be using God to escape.  I should be escaping into His arms and basking in His word and His plans for me.  I am told I would have a LOT more peace that way.  Things wouldn’t get to me so bad if I did.

I know, I know, the usual excuse is “but we are human.  We make mistakes and we can’t be perfect.  God understands”  right??  That’s one of my biggest ones.  I use it a lot here on my blogs, in fact.  But, guess what,  so was Jesus. God sent us a piece of Him to be human for a short time.  He sent His son to show us that yes we are human, but yes it is possible to be without sin.  He sent us an example that we can live life to the fullest and spend time with Him.  We can fight temptations if we really tried and really wanted to.  Because as Hebrews 4:15 says For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin.

So we really do need to reevaluate what is really important in our lives and realize that He really does need to be our priority and that putting Him off is a sin.  We have to spend time with Him and we need to stop making excuses why not to because those idols/distractions will not save us in the end.  Only He will and He showed us that even as humans it can be done.  Just strive to be like the example that He showed us.

I ask that you please show us what exactly in our lives we need to clean up.  What do we need to get rid of or spend less time doing in order to have more time with you?  Please make everything clear to us and help us to get back on track with you.  We thank you for everything that you do for us and that you have given us and may we learn to enjoy YOU more than we enjoy those things.  In your heavenly name we pray.  AMEN
